Listening To Web Traffic

listen-to-web-trafficTraffic, in the traditional sense, is annoying. I live on a somewhat busy street, outside my office window it is the same monotonous motoring sound all day. This annoyance gave me an idea: I’m playing with my new interest in the Google Analytics export data API and trying to get Flash to respond to the data via sound. Since Flash 10, we can now dynamically generate sound within Flash – granted, I’m far off from wrangling dynamic sound, but it is fun to play with.

The results are, well, about as annoying as the real-world traffic outside my window, but interesting nonetheless. I have a timer set up that sequencially moves through a graph representing my analytics data. I have three sound generators responding to the metrics. You can toggle the sound on/off for any one metric via the key in the upper left corner – you can also click on the dates below the graph to advance to a day. WARNING: please be ready to adjust your volume – because the sound is dynamic, I can’t predict what type of ‘noise’ will be produced based on the generated Google data.

Start listening here.
