Industry Experiments and Supporting Quotes

I’ve been slacking on the blog posts, obviously, but I do have a few Flash-related things in the works that I’ll be posting in the coming weeks.

I usually don’t push quotes (yes, I know my first post was about industry-related quotes that I believe in) – but, by that I mean, I don’t hang quote posters around my office nor do I seek out quotes every day, nor do I usually pass them along if I stumble across interesting quotes – which I’m doing right now with this post. I’m starting to delve a bit more in to quotes however; recently I’ve had to do a bit of research on typical quotes that are to eventually be used within a random Flash quote generator I’ve toyed with as an experiment for one client. Experimenting with concepts/code/design/ideas is a must in my industry, but many ideas or concepts end up, well, flopping in the end, or just don’t work out as planned.
No matter, they’re always educational. I recently had one of these “Flash-flops” with an experiment I was working on. I usually find that if I do have a Flash-flop, I can leave it rest for a few weeks, then revisit the idea and usually end up with something that can be useful down the road, leveraged towards an existing project, extremely educational, or at the very least end up with unique and interesting results. It’s about perseverance, and fighting through the problems you encounter, or changing the path you’re taking to end up at a better destination. So, to tie all this together, I figured I’d share a few interesting quotes that I’ve found on just that idea, perseverance.

When your dreams turn to dust, vacuum.

People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are.  I don’t believe in circumstances.  The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can’t find them, make them.
~ G.B. Shaw, Mrs. Warren’s Profession, 1893

I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.
(this I consider to be the epitome of design, Flash development, or any development for that matter)

Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors.

A diamond is a lump of coal that stuck with it.

A hero is one who knows how to hang on one minute longer.
~ Norwegian proverb

A pinch of probability is worth a pound of perhaps.
~ James Thurber, Lanterns and Lances

No matter how far you walk, how hard you work, or how bad it hurts, you’ll always get to where you need to be.

Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail.
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

The best way out is through.
~ Robert Frost

Don’t let life discourage you; everyone who got where he is had to begin where he was.
~ Richard L. Evans

Consider the postage stamp; its usefulness consists in the ability to stick to one thing until it gets there.
~ Josh Billings

If we are facing in the right direction, all we have to do is keep on walking.
~ Buddha

Nothing in the world can take place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful individuals with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.
~ Calvin Coolidge

The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.
~ Dolly Parton

Experience is a hard teacher. She gives the test first, the lesson afterwards.

Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.
~ Winston Churchill
